HOW IT WORKS (service journeys)

What happens when you book

Pick a service to see what to expect, one clear step at a time.

You complete the questionnaire in your own time. After that, most people have their appointment and video consultation and receive their written report within a few weeks. That is typically 2 to 3 weeks for a screening and 3 to 4 weeks for a full assessment, and we will confirm your own timings when you book.

You book online

Choose a clinic appointment at one of our locations, or a home visit anywhere in the UK. We arrange it within a few working days.

1

A short questionnaire

A plain-English questionnaire about the changes you have noticed, filled in online whenever suits you. We can talk you through it on the phone, and family can help.

2

The memory and thinking test

A cognitive test on a tablet, at a clinic or at home, with someone from our team alongside you. About 30 to 40 minutes, no technology of your own needed.

3

A specialist reviews everything

A consultant memory specialist looks at your questionnaire and test results together, then writes a clear letter of findings and recommendations, sharable with your GP.

4

Dementia coordinator support

If your results suggest a closer look, our dementia coordinator talks it through with you, with practical advice and the options for what to do next.

5
Our dementia coordinator teamTime with our dementia coordinator team is included as standard with every Diagnostic Assessment and Alzheimer's test, and is offered with Memory Screening if results show anything to look at more closely. Phone or video, around your availability.

COGNITIVE TEST (HDx)
How the cognitive test works

The memory test you take, explained

The cognitive test is the part of Memory Screening (and Diagnostic Assessment) that helps your specialist understand your memory and thinking. We use a certified digital cognitive test from Head Diagnostics, which supports your specialist's assessment.

What you experience. What you experience. After you book, someone from our team meets you at home or at one of our clinics. They give you a tablet with a digital pencil, explain how it works, and stay with you while you complete it. The test takes around 30 to 40 minutes. You do not need to be confident with technology; we guide you the whole way through.

What happens to the result. What happens to the result. Your answers are scored against a large group of people of a similar age, then reviewed by your consultant memory specialist alongside your questionnaire. The test does not diagnose dementia on its own; that decision belongs to your specialist, based on everything together.

The cognitive test is HDx Cognition, a certified digital test provided by our partner, Head Diagnostics.

Memory Screening is a quick check of your memory and thinking, with a written letter from a specialist at the end. Most results are reassuring.

Diagnostic Assessment is a full work-up to formally check for dementia: blood tests for other causes of memory issues, an MRI brain scan, the cognitive test, and a consultant video consultation.

The Alzheimer's test is a single blood test that specifically looks for signs of Alzheimer's disease. It is for people who want to know whether Alzheimer's disease is the underlying cause of memory changes. A consultant explains the result.

Yes. We have a short conversation with you first to make sure the Alzheimer's test answers the question you are asking, and that you have the support you need around it. If we think a different service is a better fit, we will say so.

Medefer is a CQC-registered provider, not the NHS. We deliver NHS services to NHS partner trusts, and we run this private memory and dementia service alongside that NHS work. The service you book on this page is private, so we can offer it when and where you need it. You pay for it yourself, though depending on your policy private insurance may cover part of the cost. If you would prefer an NHS route, your GP can refer you to your local NHS memory service, and you are welcome to use this service alongside NHS care while you wait.

Yes. You can use this service while you wait for an NHS memory clinic appointment. We can share findings with your GP if you ask, so any onward NHS care is informed by what we have done together.

You have a video call with a consultant memory specialist who explains what the result means and what your options are. You get a written care plan you can keep and share with your GP. Our dementia coordinator team is available to talk through wider concerns, support services, and specialist services in your area where relevant.

You do not need any tech skills. Someone from our team is with you the whole time and guides you through the cognitive test step by step. They show you how to hold the digital pencil and tap on the screen, and stay alongside you until the test is done.

Our clinics are in London and Manchester to start with. Home visits are available across the UK, so if that suits you better, just choose it when you book. We confirm your appointment with you within one working day.

Medefer is recognised by a number of private medical insurers. Cover depends on your policy and usually requires authorisation from your insurer before booking. Please check with your insurer first. Our team can provide information to support this.
